The process starts with a questionnaire. This covers a lot of practical items like era, scale, and location. More importantly, it will give us an idea of your vision, interests, and requirements for the layout. Is it a crowded urban area with high-speed Amtrak trains or a slow speed switching branch off in the hills?
It is your layout we are designing; therefore, it is important that we understand your vision.
Now we take your input and translate it into ideas and puzzle pieces. Here we start to define in a basic sense which pieces and ideas can fit in the space, and what kind of operations you can expect from that.
This is an important feedback step as it will be the starting point of the design.
Once we are facing the same direction, the fun starts! This is where we take those puzzle pieces and ideas and start sketching. We develop a preliminary design that outlines the basic features like the yard, industries, staging, rivers, and scenery.
We take you along this journey to ensure the layout is coming together as you envision it. Changes can still be made along the way.
After all the components have been defined and positioned, there is a final round of refinements. In this final step, the track is ironed out for better running, grades are defined more accurately, scenery compositions are made, structures are properly sized, and other details are finalized.
This may involve several iterations and reviews to ensure the final design is optimal.
And the design is done! A file is provided defining the layout, track plan, and various track components. All that remains is for you to enjoy the building process.
